REPORT SCOPE AND MARKET OVERVIEW
Europe entered an era of rearmament, ushering in an unprecedented investment cycle for its defence industry. Threatened by Russia and now exposed to the risk of abandonment by its American protector, Europe is stunned by the return of war as the main vector of international relations. Faced with this situation, most European countries started to substantially increase their defence budgets, and are planning major increases in arms spending up to 2030. An effort that will revolutionise the European defence industry.
Europe will account for 19% of global military spending in 2024. And according to our analysis, the combined turnover of the defence technological and industrial bases (DTIBs) of European countries reached 172 billion euros in 2023. Germany, France, the UK and Italy accounted for more than 60% of this figure. The European defence industry is currently dominated by British, French and pan-European groups. BAE Systems is by far the sector leader. Germany's Rheinmetall is likely to be its biggest rival by 2030. Its defence sales doubled in 3 years, to €7.6 billion.
Europe's defence industry faces major challenges and must undergo a radical transformation to meet the new needs of governments and adapt to the growing power of foreign competition. They have to produce much more, faster and cheaper, against a backdrop of labour shortages. This does not mean abandoning cutting-edge technologies, but designing equipment that is simpler, more robust, quicker to produce and suited to mass use in the field. This represents a profound breakthrough for a sector that has hitherto been organised around excellence, technical complexity and small production runs.
