REPORT SCOPE AND MARKET OVERVIEW

The European waste market is estimated to be worth nearly €266 billion. It includes all collection, treatment (sorting, landfill, composting, energy recovery) and recycling (or material recovery) operations. Germany is the leading market, with sales of almost €58.4 billion. It is followed by the continent's other major economic, demographic and industrial powers: France, Italy, the United Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, Spain. Poland and Turkey are among the key emerging markets.

In recent years, waste professionals have had to contend with a sharp downturn in the European economy. This situation has been exacerbated by the marked slowdown between 2022 and 2024 in the construction and industry sectors - the sector's main customers. These two sectors alone generate almost 75% of the waste produced each year in the European Union, mainly mineral waste (excavated earth, concrete, cement, etc.) and metals. This contraction in demand has had a direct impact on the activities of companies specialising in waste management.

The European waste market remains highly heterogeneous in terms of competition. Veolia is the European leader, followed by Remondis and Suez. However, the dynamics of competition differ greatly from country to country, influenced by the degree of opening up to private competition and the historical presence of well-established local players.

Waste management is undergoing a structural transformation, driven by climate change and European regulations. Reducing waste at source, phasing out landfill, and boosting recycling and energy recovery are redefining priorities. Against this backdrop, companies are also having to green their business models, control costs and automate their processes using technologies such as computer vision in sorting centres.
