REPORT SCOPE AND MARKET OVERVIEW
Revenues from motor vehicle distribution in Europe reached almost €1,000 billion in 2024. New car sales account for most of the revenues of car dealers, who are also involved in used car sales and servicing. The sector is consolidating, but remains highly fragmented. The Swiss group Emil Frey, the sector's undisputed leader, accounts for just over 2% of new car registrations in Europe. That's very little compared with the upstream market shares of the major carmakers.
Europe's major car distributors are in a race for size. Mergers and acquisitions have been on the increase in recent years, with the aim of rebalancing the balance of power with manufacturers. This strategy, for example, enabled the Swedish group Hedin Mobility to multiply its revenue by 3.4 between 2018 and 2023, and to become Europe's third largest car distributor, behind Penske Automotive. Other groups such as BymyCar, Semler, Feser and Maurin also more than doubled their business over the same period. These groups are also aiming to adapt to new trends, such as the widespread use of leasing, the growing importance of subscription offers, and the digitalisation of the purchasing process, all of which require massive investment.
The concentration of the sector is also one of the consequences of the crisis in the European automotive sector. In 2024, the number of new cars sold in Europe was still 18% below its 2019 level. None of the major markets, such as Germany, the UK, France and Italy, are immune to this trend. This illustrates the persistence of a number of difficulties. In particular, a significant proportion of European households remain reluctant to buy a 100% electric vehicle, preferring to postpone their project or turn to the second-hand market.
