The papermaking industry covers three main activities: pulping, papermaking and paper finishing processes. Most paper manufacturers are engaged in at least two of these three activities. Pulp is obtained from wood or recovered paper, which is then transformed into paper products, such as newsprint and magazine, printing and writing paper, sanitary and household products, packaging, and specialised papers. Finally, the characteristics and properties of paper and board are enhanced through a series of finishing processes. […]

Pulp production is generally located next to forest areas, while demand follows final consumption trends. As such, many pulp producers are concentrated in the Americas region due to its rich forest resources and higher pulp species productivity, while paper consumption is shifting to emerging economies, particularly China, due to the rapid growth in GDP, population and urbanisation. - How intense is competition?

Competitive rivalry in the pulp, paper and packaging industry is intense and no single company dominates the market. The consumer tissue and personal care segment is particularly competitive as it attracts not only specialist paper players but also multinational generalist giants such as P&G and Colgate Palmolive. Major paper groups tend to be vertically integrated, which gives them a competitive advantage over non-integrated players thanks to greater control over upstream inputs and production process optimisation.
